Guide Profile: Philip K. Keter
Philip Keter is known to be one of the best guides in the Masai Mara. Born in Trans-Mara District near what is now the expansive Trans-Mara forest, he is a natural Naturalist who started to learn about wildlife as a young boy whilst herding his father’s cattle and later as a school scout. This is how he came to know numerous birdcalls and species.
Educated in Kilgoris secondary and Narok High Schools, Keter is a man with an unusually vast background. He joined the Kenya Polytechnic in Nairobi to study Marketing & Salesmanship. He later worked as a Sales & Marketing Instructor in Machakos District, but the bush urged him to come back to the Mara where he swiftly changed his career to become a naturalist. In 1997, Keter attended a Ranger training course at Phinda, a famous reserve in the Kwa-Zulu Natal region, in South Africa. He has twice attended a refresher course for CCAfrica rangers at Mwewe Training School in Tanzania, one of the best trainings you can have. Keter has also attended the Kenya Utalii College National Competition on guiding & general knowledge, where he performed very well, and several workshops & seminars on wildlife management and environmental impact assessment.
Keter has worked as a naturalist/guide for a number of reputable companies/corporations including Abercrombie & Kent, Windsor Hotels, Conservation Corporation Africa and Walt Disney World in the USA.
He is currently among the few others who have qualified as Gold Rated Members of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association ( KPSGA ) becoming one of the very first guides in the country to hold the Highly Prestigious Badge.
