Guide Profile: Joshua Muthama Munyele

Joshua was born in 1968 in Kitui District, Eastern Province. He attended primary school at Kisauni in Kitui district and sat for his examinations in 1983 and scored well, but did not manage to go to a government school due to financial problems so he had to join a harambee school.

In 1984 he dropped out of school because of lack of school fees and was employed as a gardener whereby he saved his earnings for two years.

In 1986 he went back to private school in Nairobi with the help of his brother who was a casual worker in industrial area. He sat for his 'O’ level examination in 1989 and the following year got casual employment at the Carnivore restaurant. In 1991 he changed his job to a tarmac staff at Wilson airport.

In 1992 he was employed by heritage group in Samburu as a restaurant waiter, then started internal training whereby he was promoted to assistant head waiter.

Joshua got interested in flora and fauna in 1996 and was sent to the fundamental course for birds (ornithological course) and was promoted to a nature walk guide for three years.

In 1999 he went to Kenya Utalii college for driver guiding course after finishing the same year, he attained his Bronze Level certificate from the Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association (KPSGA) and was promoted to a driver guide, after three years he sat for his Silver Level and passed.

Joshua joined Southern Cross Safaris in 2003 as a safari driver guide where he is to date. He is married.
